Her debut novel, Brightly Woven, achieved third place in the 2010 GoodReads Choice Awards for Best Debut Author. She was also chosen to be the writer behind the novelisation of Episode IV A New Hope: The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farmboy. Perhaps her most well-known novels are those in her The Darkest Minds series. This series follows a girl with extraordinary powers following a battle with a deadly disease. She is left as one of the few surviving children of America and has to fight for a life worth living.
Alexandra Bracken has mentioned in interviews that she was hugely influenced by British authors of children’s books, namely JK Rowling and Roald Dahl. She has said that Dahl’s books are largely responsible for her own aspirations to be an author of books for children. Like many people of her generation, she grew up reading Harry Potter and felt the books to be an important part of her adolescence.
