Classandra Clare is a notable American young adult novel writer. She is famous for her paranormal YA series The Mortal Instruments. She earned numerous awards and prizes for her debut novel

Clare was born as Judith Rumelt on July 27, 1973 to American Jewish parents, Elizabeth and Richard Rumelt, in Tehran, Iran. Her parents are writer and business school professor professionally. Clare travelled a lot as a child with her family, trekking Himalayas and living shortly in England, Switzerland and France. Due to her family’s customary recurring travels, Clare found stability in reading books. She returned to Los Angles to attend high school where she developed a keen interest in writing amusing stories. Inspired by Jane Austen’s The Beautiful Cassandra, a short story, she produced a novel with the same title. Later that name served as her pseudonym in her literary works.

After majoring in English, Clare started off her career as a re
porter at a number of established entertainment magazine and tabloids like The Hollywood Reporter. She used to write fan fictions before she took on serious writing projects. Her fan fiction The Very Secret Diaries inspired by The Lord of the Rings and The Draco Trilogy by Harry Potter became popular among fans of the series. Clare also contributed to a Baen anthology of humor fantasy with a short story The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord, which marked as her first publication. She wrote short stories for other anthologies, as well, by the name Magic in the Mirrorstone and So Fey.

Clare started off her serious writing career in 2004 with City of Bones being the first installment in The Mortal Instruments series. Inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, she brought the mythologies to life in the modern New York City. City of Bones is about a young girl Clary Fray who is unaware of the existence of supernatural creatures and her significant role in their world. She founds out the hard way as her mother goes missing and a Shadowhunter Jace Wayland saves her life from demons sent by Valentine, Downworlders’ enemy. Clare has incorporated a number of mythological elements and supernatural creatures. These supernatural beings include Shadowhunter (those who fight Downworlders), werewolves, faeries, vampires and warlocks etc.

Questions

Briefly summarize the book

Clary wants to go to Idris to save her mother from the hands of Valentine. Then Luke and Magnus warned her to go and also Jace because they wanted to protect her, despite this she created her own Portal to go to Idris and later falls sick. Simon becomes a Daylighter and he is being criticized by other vampires by it. After this Clary recovers and meets Amantis, the sister of Luke, who was married to Stephen Herondale and was in the Circle with Valentine. Suddenly, Luke and Magnus left Clary alone, she went to see Jace but he was with another girl and she cried. During the curse of this story Clary and Jace have strong discussions with each other, we meet Sebastian Verlac, who in reality was the son of Valentine in a disguise, also, the Downworlders and the Nephilim decide to be allies after Clary confesses that she has the power for creating runes, she also finds the White Book book which brought back her mother and she backfired at her for lying to her, and the second time they met Jocelyn tells her that Jace is not her brother and he is not a demon, and like her he was injected with angel blood, giving them powers that most of the Shadowhunters do not have. Soon after, Jace confesses his feelings to Clary and apologizes to her, and she returned those feelings and stayed together. The brother of Alec and Isabelle was killed and then it was discovered that it was indeed Jonathan Cristopher,  the son of Valentine, he fought with Jace, meanwhile, Clary was captured by Valentine and the Downworlders and Shadowhunters were fighting against Valentine in couples, at that moment Luke confesses his feelings for Jocelyn, and Alec and Magnus reunited. At the end of the book, Valentine and Jonathan Cristopher were killed by Jace, and now he knows who he is, and who was his biological family, there was a party in which Shadowhunters and Downworlers were celebrating, Jace and Clary became an official couple, Clary decides to remain in the Institute to train as a Shadowhunter and Simon decided to go to high school despite being a vampire.

Describe the character/person who changed the most from the beginning of the book to the end of the book. Explain the change and what caused it.

Simon because at the beginning he was very insecure about being a vampire, and didn't accept it, and was afraid of himself, but then after he was almost killed and was imprisoned by the Clave and his love towards Clary made him a more confident person and also to fight to destroy Valentine s' regime and also to go to High School as a vampire.

Describe a minor character/person in the book who had major importance. Explain

Amantis, because she is the sister of Luke and she married the father of Jace and was involved in the Circle, also because she saved Clary s' life.

Describe one major external conflict and one major internal conflict found in this book.

One mayor external conflict is Valentine having total power, and one major internal conflict is Jace questioning himself who was his real family and who he really is.

Above you rated this book. Explain in detail why you gave this book that score.

I gave the book 8/10 because, Clary is so stubborn, she basically gets her mother save and then she starts to keep taking about how she lied to her and gets mad at her., something that in my opinion could be solved in the second book Also the main characters didn't know they were actually three Jonathan Cristophers in the whole series, and it is only revealed in the end of the book. Despite all of that, I thought the book was very interesting and what I like the most was the fight between the two Jhonathan, and that Calry finally had the courage to tell her talents and embrace her own identity as a Shadowhunter and remain in the Intitute, also that incest at the book, like as an excuse, for Clary and Jace to be together for real, is not necessary.

Evaluate the end of the book. Considering how the book unfolded, is it an effective ending? Why? Why not?

Is an effective ending because, Clary finded her own identity, Jace knows what he is two, Jocelyn and Luke are together and their archive their main goal that was to defeat Valentine.

If this book had gone one more chapter, what would have happened? Explain

Simon will be going to school and they will talk about the life of Clary at the institute
