Briefly summarize the book

It is about a bunch of letters, written by Charlie the main character, who is considered a very introverted person, in most of his letters he wrote about his life as a freshmen, also he describes his relationships with his family (parents and siblings), the pain he felt when his best friend Michael, who decided to take his own life, that he was in advanced literature and his only friend was his teacher Bill.

He also writes about the pain he felt when he lost his Aunt Helen and how he wanted to be with her again, then, he met Patrick, and Sam, two seniors, and they become best friends, he started to develop a crush on Sam, but she doesn’t like him back  and has an abusive boyfriend named Craig.

He starts to go to parties, smoke, and drink, and also had sex for the first time with a girl named Mary Elizabeth, he was dating her without feeling any romantic or sexual attraction towards her.

His friends after discovering he was lying they left him and, he was feeling guilty about it, but thought he deserved it.

Later he apologizes to all his friends, and they hang out together before and after graduation of his only friends. But after graduation, he felt alone and wanted to die so he decided to take his own life. He failed and his family was worried about him, after two months in the hospital he started sophomore year, and twenty years later, he writes a letter saying that he is still alive and how is very important to ask for help if you have depression and suicidal thoughts.

Describe the character/person who changed the most from the beginning of the book to the end of the book. Explain the change and what caused it.

Charlie, at In the begging he was very awkward and shy but then he became more confident about himself and more outgoing. What caused the change was hanging out with Patrick and Sam and his suicide attempt.

Describe a minor character/person in the book who had major importance. Explain

Teacher Bill because he was one of the few teachers that understood Charlie s’ situation and motivated him to read and achieve his dreams.

Describe one major external conflict and one major internal conflict found in this book.

The major external conflict is the traumatic events Charlie had in the past and the major internal conflict in the book is Charlie fighting with himself being happy and sad for the things he does for himself and everyone.

Above you rated this book. Explain in detail why you gave this book that score.

Ten because Charlie is a very good representation of a real teenager who has his struggles and it describes perfectly how the lives of teenagers are in school, how they behave. I also liked how they portray strong subjects like suicide, depression, love, sex, abuse, and the loss of a loved one. And how the book recommends other books to read and music to listen.

Evaluate the end of the book. Considering how the book unfolded, is it an effective ending? Why? Why not?

Yes because I could know that Charlie was still alive and living despite having mental illnesses.

If this book had gone one more chapter, what would have happened?

Charlie would write a letter about his life as an adult, what he decided to study and if he is married and has kids, and what happened to his family and friends of high school.

Choose five (5) of the following sentence starters and write a brief reflection for each.

1. I think Charlie had depression.

2. While I was reading I realized Charlie s’ sister was abused.

3. As I read I wondered if Sam is okay with herself.

4. When I read I discovered that most teenagers died of suicide.

5. If I were Charlie, I would always tell the truth to my friends and family.
